Juror’s Statement, Ink Wash Painting Category LEE Cheng-Ming

Painting a Colorful World with Ink

Traditional ink wash paintings seldom reflect real life, and instead exude a fixed sense of spiritual isolation. However, contemporary ink wash
paintings offer more diversity in formats while also expressing more concern for social and environmental issues. As a result, themes can vary

significantly. Preferred subjects in earlier times were“mountain and water”paintings followed by flowers and birds, and then humans. Viewers can

immerse themselves in these paintings' forests, bridges or brooks, although there remains an atmosphere of isolation. By contrast, most prize-winning
                                         st
works in this category at the 21 Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition of Taichung City focus on human beings and concerns about their relationship with
Mother Nature, with active participation replacing an otherworldliness.
After jurors' careful consideration during the judging process, characteristic works displaying the uniqueness of different facets of creation were

selected. I'd like to offer these artists my congratulations and add some observations made during judging.

First-prize winner, HSIEH Fu-Yuan's“Bad Romance”, depicts naked women wading through the weeds. By using red and gray colors, Hsieh

creates an ambience of bewilderment, with birds fl ying amid the willows surrounding the women, who seem as if they are trying to break away from
their chains. It is a splendid work that combines exquisite techniques and noteworthy ideas. Second-prize winner, ZHANG Mei-Ling's“The Youthful

Seventeen” arranges a youth squatting on a shaking wood chair, ignoring the waves and collapsing mountains in a profound image that displays
                         ,
the young man's helplessness in the face of his environment and humble happiness to embrace short tranquil moments between disturbances. TSAI

Yi-Te's“Daydream Series II”earned third prize. The black-and-white hues form a strong contrast—staggered lines on the white canvas developing a

sense of swaying lights as the clothing-changing women half-hide and half-reveal their upper bodies in front of a black background in an image that
is indeed alluring. The creation and cultivation of ambience is the best part of this work.

Awards of merit were given to four talented artists whose works have unique characteristics. Using a role reversal, ZHANG Jia-Ning's “Joking”

               is filled with the color of irony; HSU Hsiu-Lan's“Flow”uses semi-conscious painting techniques to arrange a personal and stylish composition;

HUANG Pao-Hsien's“Memory Window”constructs the image of a fishing port outside the window via overlapping pictures; by means of tangled

lines and traces of water and ink, YANG Chih-Yuan's“What For?”gives off an ambience of free and easy.

The 16 short-listed works which placed at the top of 170 total submissions are precious pieces as well.
