Entering its 30 year, the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition continues to raise the bar in terms of artistic quality. In addition to significantly increasing
prize money, the organizers have actively pooled resources to help award-winning works reach prominent international exhibition platforms. This
not only broadens global perspectives but also greatly enhances the sense of honor for recipients. This year’s jury included SUN Yi-Hua, LIOU Ling-
Lie, NI Yu-Shan, CHANG Ching-Wen, and myself — five jurors in total. The preliminary round reviewed 71 submissions. Each entry was carefully
assessed by the jury, evaluating concept, composition, expressiveness, and treatment of detail. After multiple rounds of selection, 12 works were
shortlisted for the final review. In the final round, 11 works were physically presented and examined. Following a vote, six pieces were chosen for
final ranking, with the top three prizes and two Award of Merit winners determined by ranked voting. Below are detailed commentaries on each
                           award-winning work:
First Prize went to “The Parallel Deep Time and Dasein” by LIN Yu-Chuan. This work features a uniquely atmospheric structure achieved through
the subtle charm of mineral pigments, creating a dreamlike sense of spatial layering. The weathered texture of dead wood, stretching across the
canvas, traverses boundaries and evokes rebirth in the cycle of life and death. The interplay of gold and silver leaf with flowing pigments creates
ethereal, elusive images of flora and fauna, symbolizing the continuous transformation of life on Earth and the interdependence that sustains it.
Technically and aesthetically, the piece demonstrates the complexity and beauty of traditional gouache techniques while gently guiding the viewer
toward reflections on nature and the philosophy of life. With its exceptional qualities, the work received unanimous acclaim from the jury and truly
                           deserves its top recognition.
Second Prize went to “The Realm of Weightlessness” by LAI Chu-Ying. Through elegant colors and refined brushwork, this piece depicts a
dreamlike interior corner imbued with quiet, emotional resonance. Varied and staggered potted plants, rendered with skillful layering, sit in solitude
within the dim shadows of the space. Distant, oversized whales and rays stir the air, sending leaves fluttering. Soft lighting falling across a chair
evokes a surreal and melancholic ambiance. The work speaks gently of memory and longing, enveloped in poetic tranquility. Third Prize went to
“Precipitation of Time” by TSAI Pei-Chen. Using minimal line elements and a lowered viewpoint, the artist portrays a still water surface that silently
reflects deeply embedded, scar-like traces of the past. The composition exudes a gentle and tranquil spirit. Its subdued palette invites boundless
interpretation, while the act of quiet self-confrontation becomes a meditative journey within a boundless, ethereal space.
Award of Merit winners are “Go Home” by LI Mei-Hua, which captures the simplest of everyday moments — rendered with vivid and bright
colors — to portray the familiar scenes of daily life. The warmth of sunlight and the shadows of people waiting at a station convey a deep and
heartfelt longing for home; “Slow Stroll under the Dim Light” by WANG Shih-Ying uses meticulous detail and subtle color to create a nocturnal
stillness. The fluttering fireflies, resilient roots, and interwoven plants whisper messages of life and renewal from the depths of the forest. The six
selected works span a rich array of themes — from family and gender issues to realism and fantasy, from vibrant blossoms to falling leaves. Each
piece expresses a unique artistic language. Their varied use of color, texture, and the inherent versatility of traditional gouache mediums highlight
not only the material’s potential but also the artists’ creative evolution. We look forward to even more outstanding contributions in the future as these
artists continue to refine their practice.
In summary, this year’s prize-winning works showcase the richness of the gouache medium while also responding thoughtfully to contemporary
social concerns and personal emotions. We hope that glue color artists will continue to push the boundaries of the medium, using its distinctive
visual language to create works brimming with vitality and insight.
