As TING Ching said, “The ancients in seal carving thought beyond the
crowd, their strokes flowing like clouds over the mountain ridge. They
appreciated the wonders of the Six Dynasties, Tang, and Song, yet never
rigidly adhered to conventions.” To think beyond the crowd and avoid
rigid orthodoxy is to perceive the marvelous and thus transcend the
habits of one’s era, drawing anew from antiquity. To this day, I continue to
learn from the masters of the Ming, Qing, and even contemporary times,
embracing both their strengths and quirks, finding endless joy in the
interplay of skill and spontaneity. This work is a recent carving of selected
verses from LIU Tsung-Yuan’s "Eight Episodes in Yungchou."
