The Ode to the Red Cliff chronicles the sceneries
Su Shi saw and his thoughts visiting the Red
Cliff with his friends on a ship at night. Triggered
by his subjective feelings, Su adopted a Q&A
format to reflect from his comfort in the moonlit
night, melancholic sighs for the past and present,
and finally his spiritual liberation. The Ode
of the Red Cliff reflects Su’s unique artistic
conceptualization through its composition and
structural arrangement, exhibiting profound
emotions and deep meanings, achieving a high
status in the history of Chinese literature. It also
greatly influenced later odes, proses, and poetry.
