This year’s 30 Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition saw an enthusiastic response in the Ink Wash Painting, with a total of 151 submissions (including
4 from abroad). The overall quality of the works was impressive. The jury consisted of five judges: CHUANG Lien-Tung, TSAI You, HUANG Dong-
Fu, LEE Tsung-Jen, and myself. The preliminary review was conducted by evaluating submitted images. Each judge selected half of their preferred
works individually, after which the combined votes were tallied. Through multiple rounds of narrowing down, 25 works were shortlisted based on
the number limit. The secondary review involved examining the original artworks, confirming 22 pieces for selection. After several rounds of further
screening and evaluation, the jury selected 4 Award of Merit winners and 3 top prize winners. The selected works for this exhibition showcase a
rich diversity of painting styles, characterized by lively charm and varied artistic expressions. The brushwork and ink techniques demonstrate skillful
craftsmanship, with ink and color applied adeptly to achieve a style that is graceful, unpretentious, and robust. While honoring classical traditions,
the artists still manage to bring fresh creativity and innovation. Overall, the exhibition presents many pieces worthy of appreciation.
First Prize went to CHANG CHIEN Ke-Yun’s “The Wave.Worship,” a three-panel screen featuring interconnected composition to capture the
long-lasting, reverent ambiance of water and moonlight. The imagery flows smoothly and naturally, uniquely embodying a spiritual, serene charm
that reflects vitality and expressive spirit. The quiet energy and ink tones blend harmoniously and unpretentiously, evoking an elegant and lively
                           atmospheric mood.
Second Prize-winning “Wherever You Go” by HUANG Ching-Chun transforms emotional thoughts into a symbolic environment. The background
interlaces multiple tree branches surrounding a girl sitting on a tree, portraying a mental space where reality and dreams intertwine and renew. The
work shines with a refined, graceful mood reflecting deep emotional contemplation.
Third Prize-winning “The Gateless Way – A Pursuit” by ZHENG Qi-Yao uses objects as metaphors to express emotions. The meticulously
depicted cat-like figure leaping through a suspended door ring is vivid and lively. The background is purified with ink washes to represent bustling
brilliance, with skillful brushwork and ink that create a clever, harmonious layout filled with dynamic momentum.
Award of Merit winner, PAN Lu-Chen’s “Wandering Flavors” depicts the lively atmosphere of street markets, employing plein air observations to
capture the environment. The semi-abstract yet detailed expression balances realism and impressionism, achieving a measured and immersive state
of mind and style. CHEN Yu-Shou’s “The Five Blessings,” constructs a multi-dimensional spatial connection, using bats and branches of the blessing
tree to evoke the imagery of the five blessings arriving at the door. The finely detailed shapes of grass, leaves, and trees are carefully composed
with harmonious color tones. The posture is balanced, and the spirit is infused with vitality, enlivening brush and ink charm. TSAI Yi-Te’s “Bond”
expresses emotional scenes of family life and parent-child interaction. The composition presents natural postures with well-managed concealment
and light, while the depiction of figures is vivid and expressive, featuring original and well-composed shapes and gestures. PAN Hsiang-Chun’s
“Golden Years” shows parent and child birds arranged within a domestic setting with calm responsiveness. The composition seeks variation within
order, attaining a compact, ethereal quality. The brush and ink expression is solid and rustic, with stable and graceful artistic methods.
The 15 remaining shortlisted works are also excellent pieces, each with distinct temperament and style. The painting of forms and subjects,
brush and ink use, and spatial arrangements balance void and solid, light and heavy strokes, demonstrating skillful control over form and texture.
The artists convey their own creative concepts and emotional expressions, each bearing unique connotations and stylistic features.
This year’s works in the Ink Wash Category at the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition showcases rich changes in brushwork and ink transitions, with
dots, strokes, and lines naturally expressing beauty and character. The ink texture is long-lasting, and emotional expression flows freely. The
outstanding compositions vividly convey cultural spirit, pursuing innovative fusion and reinvigoration of tradition. The works exhibit a spirit of creative
inheritance — both connected and uniquely strong — with a contemporary charm and vibrancy. Through expressive brush and ink, the works build
visual forms and atmospheres that embody the rich and splendid charm of contemporary ink wash art.
