In “Manual on Calligraphy by Sun Guo-Ting,”
Sun pointed out that, through his practice of
calligraphy over decades, he found theorists
since Han and Tang to be “most focused on the
vanity of appearances, but lost in the theory
within.” This was a milestone essay in the
history of Chinese calligraphy, as he proposed
his now famous view on calligraphy: “learn
from the ancient people to go with the temporal
trends but eliminate the errors made by the
contemporaries,” which laid the foundation for
calligraphic aesthetic theories. His achievement
in calligraphic art is equally revered as his
achievement in calligraphic theory. This writing
is an extract of Sun’s theory on learning to keep
pace with temporal trends but eliminating errors,
drawing inspiration from the old for innovation.
