Juror’s Statement, Sc ulpture Category WANG Kuo-Hsian
th
This year, the 19 Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition of Taichung City, received a total of 73 submissions in the sculpture category, of which
12 were from overseas. Three pieces were received from Indonesia, three from Bulgaria, two from Spain, and one each from Malaysia,
Italy, Israel and the Philippines. There were 12 candidates entered into the final judging review that decided the first, second and third prize
winners (one each), awards of merit (three entries) and works that were short-listed (six entries). Although no international submissions
entered into the second stage of judging this year, we are looking forward to having a good exhibition next year.
In terms of the awarded submissions, my statement of criticism is noted below.
The First Prize winning "Weaving the Dream" by YANG Meng-Hao reveals a tough, but remarkable, process of creation. The artist
chose timber as the main material. It is easy to tell, by the delicate overlapping texture carved into its surface, which this piece took the
artist a long time to create. The whole work consists of a horizontal and vertical woven structure with a hollow body that complements the
artist's original vision. It is such a great piece that has been created through hard work.
Second Prize winner "Geld" by LIN Chen-Hsun portrays an almost unreal state. The artist built a physical illusion using a realistic
approach. By presenting the artist's ideas and personal sentiment, this piece truly reflects the ambiguous nature of reality and emotion. The
artist has very delicate sculpting skills and I also see well-planned colors applied to the piece. Overall, it is an outstanding work.
The Third Prize winning "Dilemma" by HUANG Meng-Chin displays and questions the status between evolution and degeneration.
The use of simple, yet repeated, forms has led to the creation of a large hanging sculpture. The artist nicely presented ideas concerned with
the suspicion between reality and the virtual. In regards to material application, it perfectly matches the main concept of the work and, thus,
I think the piece really displays the artist's ideas appropriately.
Award of Merit winner "About Them" by LIN Jian-Ting leaves a strong impression with its use of space. The artist destructed animals'
images and rearranged them to convey an idea-that there is a special arrangement of signs and signals between animals. It reflects animals'
behaviors and their signals. Having such a system, animal behavior turns out to be a secret rule (kept from us) that runs their society. This
art piece presents a montage approach that indirectly and intermittently evokes our awareness of animals.
The Award of Merit winning "Position" by SHE Wen-Ying shows the possibility of overturning hierarchy and power by pointing out
the pressure of gender issues. The artist applied the materials and used them as a base for carving, as well as presenting a symbolic pattern
through the work. It truly shows the ongoing situation, as conveyed by its title "In Position". I believe this artwork presents the artist's ideas
well.
The Awards of Merit work "Mandatory Love" by LIN Guan-Jun is gently, but specifically, presented with different kinds of rocks
and real objects. The artist shows adept stone carving skills that provide a metaphor for the false conflict between humans and animals.
Therefore, we observe that a pair of human arms has been installed on an animal object. This strongly evokes introspection and perfectly
displays the intention of the artist.
