                           LIAO Pen-Shen

Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition is a preimer brand of Taichung City’s art, and a benchmark national art competition. It is a highly
competitive annual international event for all artists, and it is quite an achievement for the competition to be celebrating its 29 th
                           anniversary this year.
The 29 th Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition received 437 entries, with ten international entries from Hong Kong, Mongolia, Malaysia,
Vietnam, India, and New Zealand. A jury of five, including Liao Pen-Shen, Ms. HSUEH Pao-Shia, CHUANG Min-Chung, KUO Po-
Chou, and SHIEH Juin, selected 40 entries for final evaluation in the preliminary review, among which, 38 were delivered. After close
examination and voting, the jury selected a total of 32 prize-winning entries, including top three prize winners, five Award of Merit
                           winners, 24 Short LIsts.
The organizer compared the originals received for the final review with the received digital files for the preliminary review,
and discovered that six originals had been modified after passing the preliminary review, which was a serious violation. In all
competitions, no modification is allowed after a work has been submitted, and we hope that future participants can keep this in
mind. Consequently, the jurors unanimously voted to disqualify the six entries.
First Prize winner “Think ()” by HSIEH Ming-Chi is a work of mixed media that depicts the conflict between time and life,
presenting the inner fight between destruction and reconstruction. The author uses old and mottled door panels to present the
past that has disappeared in time, and the mottled texture of the panels record all the past details. The two bright color blocks on
the left in warm and cool tones are like a door for people to enter into memory, faithfully revealing the joy, sorrow, the beginning,
development, turning points, and culmination, of every stage in life. The painting features a solid composition that is clean and
powerful; the layered texture creates rich effects. The painting captures the atmosphere very well, making it a complete work of
                           substance.
The Second Prize went to WANG Yun-Ying’s "Estrangement.” Mankind is a social species, and facing all kinds of people daily,
we always try to understand their true nature. The artist adopts a third-person perspective, observing the scene through a large
frosted glass; the inside is visible but blurry, as if the artist was watching flowers in mist, or people standing on both sides of a silk
screen. The glass is clear, yet we never get to see what is really going on inside. The overall color tone is consistent and tender, and
the depiction of the glass is sophisticated and realistic, making it a truly thought-provoking work.
CHIEN Jackie’s “Ophelia’s Weird World” won Third Prize. The painting depicts the weird world of inner fantasy. Using red as the
primary tone, the artist applies thin layers of create the atmosphere of the painting, and follow the patterns to draw some strange
little creatures that, despite their cute appearances, bring to the painting a strange feeling of weirdness and sorrow.
The five Award of Merit winners are all quality works that display own unique expressive styles.
In general, there were a lot fewer traditional impressionist paintings among this year’s entries; instead, there were more
works depicting animations, videogames, and strange deformed shapes. Afterall, the times are constantly changing. Finally,
                           congratulations to all 32 prize-winners!
