Director's Preface
This year marks the 28 th edition of "Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition." Since its inception
in 1996, the exhibition has gradually grown from a local exhibition into an international
competition, becoming one of a handful large-scale local public art exhibitions that has a
global reach and receives the largest number of submissions. At the same time, in response
to the arrival of the digital age, the exhibition continues to improve its application system
and has established a digital evaluation system for jurors to review and select works using a
Director, Cultural Affairs Bureau, Taichung City tablet; the system not only allows jurors to easily enlarge the pictures to examine the details
during the preliminary review, but is also connected to the database of the application system,
minimizing waste of paper in the review process. Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition upholds
the spirit of pursuing excellence and makes changes on a rolling basis to meet the needs of
the age, growing through constant dialogues and reflections and becoming a reputable art
competition in the minds of contemporary artists.
Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition launches annual open call for submissions in eleven
categories, including Ink Wash, Calligraphy, Seal Engraving, Glue Color Painting, Oil
Painting, Watercolor Painting, Printmaking, Photography, Sculpture, Crafts, and Digital Art,
from April 1 to 15, and offers NTD 3.86 million in total prize money; at the same time, the
Cultural Affairs Bureau is working on preparing an even bigger prize money budget, hoping
to continually encourage and reward brilliant creative talents with expertise in different
media. Overseas entries have achieved outstanding results this year, winning First Prize in
two categories; of course, domestic entries are not to be outdone, such as Mr. CHAN Wen-
fu, who has now won Frist Prize in the Photography category in two consecutive years,
displaying outstanding creative prowess.
This year's winning works showcase the winners' brilliant creative techniques. One thing
worth noting is that many participating artists in different categories have coincidentally
incorporated the use of readymade objects, displaying the flexibility and variation of
contemporary art and demonstrating the artists' creative philosophies and spirits through the
works. Regardless of realistic depictions, abstract expressions, or surrealist constructs, the
artists use own creative vocabularies to shine light on real aspects of human life or explore
personal state of mind or subtle emotional fluctuation, putting Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition's
broad diversity on full display.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau would like to thank domestic and overseas artists for the
support and encouragement over the past year, as they find time outside of their busy
schedules and overcome difficulties to transport the works and participate in the exhibition.
With the help and participation of every dedicated juror, artist, and staff member, Da Dun
Fine Arts Exhibition successfully held two preparatory meetings and evaluation meetings
for all three stages, received and returned submissions for the three stages of evaluation,
compiled and printed the album, and organized a series of events and activities, including
the award ceremony and exhibition, driving the development of art in Taichung City and
establishing a platform of art exchange for Taiwan and the world.
