Mayor's Preface
With the arrival of the post-pandemic age, Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition was more than
aware of artists' robust creative energy that had been brewing for some time. This enthusiasm
was on full display at this year's competition, as the Cultural Affairs Bureau received 1,760
entries from all over the world in April, setting the second highest mark in the exhibition's
28-year history. With the number of entries received, this year's competition was especially
fierce and each and every winner is a brilliant artist who has showcased technical maturity
Mayor, Taichung City and rich creativity.
Taichung City Government has long supported and promoted Da Dun Fine Arts
Exhibition. Since its inception in 1996, the exhibition has gradually grown from a local
exhibition into the international competition that calls for entries from around the world
today. Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition has built one of the most important stages of exchange
where domestic and overseas artists can learn from and compete with their peers. The annual
exhibition of winning works features brilliant works of diverse media from around the world,
offering art-loving citizens a great opportunity to appreciate art. Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition
provides artists a stage to showcase their talent, and through mutual appreciation and
competition process, it helps to find their own creative positioning and strengths. Taichung
City promotes Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition to facilitate healthy competition among artists
from different countries, jointly producing exciting fruits of art creation.
This year, two overseas entries won First Prize in the Seal Engraving and Digital Art
categories. What an amazing feat! One of them was Japanese artist Yuki Kawauchi, who
won Second Prize last year at the 27 th Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition and came to Taichung
to attend the award ceremony in person, which shows how much overseas artists value
this exhibition. Domestic artists' achievements this year should not be overlooked as
well. Photographer CHAN Wen-fu won First Prize for the second year in a row, emerging
triumphant again by utilizing aerial photography technique to combine historic site surveying
and historical and cultural concerns; LIAO Wen-pin, winner of First Prize in the Oil Painting
category, presents his concerns for environmental issues through masterful realist techniques,
and uses precise creative vocabulary to display his longing for social ideals.
Art can cultivate the spirit and cleanse the mind. Pandemic prevention measures in the
past few years have been gradually lifted, and many works were inspired by artists' personal
experience of investigating natural environment, presenting in-depth dialogues between
the human society and themselves through art. Artists, collectors, and all art-loving friends
have stayed by the side of Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition to weather through the COVID-19
pandemic together. In the future, Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition will continue to accompany
all friends in different disciplines of art to face the challenges and changes every year, and
timely fulfill its roles as an important driver and bridge, jointly constructing a wonderful
artistic and cultural environment.
