This year's Printmaking category received 51 entries, including four from overseas, one each from Mainland China, Mongolia, Malaysia, and the U.S.
Overall, the entries achieved high levels of artistic quality, but only eight entries were short-listed after the preliminary review due to the exhibition quota.
In the final review, the jury evaluated originals and selected top three prize winners, two Award of Merit winners, and three selected works.
First Prize winner is "Dress Up No. 3" by TUNG Chuen-Yu, who printed image onto a metal plate through the sensitization method of screen printing.
The work mainly explores the transition of men, events, and things through space and time; they come together and transform and grow, illustrating a
concept of grafting. The artist observes the growth of plants, branching and grafting two plants for them to grow better and prosper with greater vitality,
achieving eugenic improvement. The work features plant combined with suit, dress, human figure, and sewing patterns to emphasize the metaphor that
the grafting and transformation of different species are like dressing up.
Second Prize winner "Existence-W#17" by KIM Hyun-Jin is a relief print expressed through multiple press on single woodcut plate. Through
creation, the artist triggers inner echoes to consider the connections and existences of self and other lives like grass. The process of multiple press on
single plate allows the artist to savor the wonderfulness and preciousness of existence over and over again. The print uses black base to accentuate the Printmaking
subject in white, presenting the beauty of contrast. Using various colors, sizes, and placements, the artist decorates the print with grass and plant to exhibit
a robust vibrancy, producing an excellent work.
Third Prize winner "Early Spring" by Muran is a print of multiple press on single plate. The theme is early morning in spring, and the print features
intricate decorations from still life and objects on the wall to the blossoms of chinaberry tree and stray cats pushing one another outside the room. All the
objects form a harmonious composition, and the colors are tender and harmonized. The artist connects falling leaves and scattering sunlight outside with
the elegant tranquility indoor; the potted plant on the left is ideally placed, and the use of contrasting colors is quite elegant. For multiple press on single
plate, a single plate must be preserved until the very end of the process for the final images and colors. Every step must be well calculated and planned,
and there is no turning back. Thus, the artist must pay attention to all details, and the creative process is really not that easy.
Award of Merit winner "War Animals" by PAN Yi-Kai is a combination plate of paper intaglio and heliogravure, mounted after printing. Heliogravure
requires the artist to process all the images and textures, producing a negative through exposure before sensitization. As for paper intaglio, the artist
must carefully apply ink to all parts of the plate and wipe it clean printing to create rich textures. During the creative process, the artist collected various
scientific pictures, diagrams, and specimen drawings throughout history. Through surrealist collage, the artist expresses the collected materials through
the rich textures of paper intaglio to reassemble a fictional illustrated book of biology, showcasing agile and sophisticated techniques and expressions.
Award of Merit winner "Survive" by LIN Kuan-Pin is a work of mimeograph woodcut. Woodcut is a fight against the fibers of wood, presenting a
force that breaks through the whispers and inner dialogues of past experiences. Through this, the artist conjures the past life experiences and fragments
of life spent with family in order to prove the existence of the past. Through intricate carving techniques, the artist depicts the forest in memory, drawing
from memory a real landscape for him to reminisce his loved ones, which is a new interpretation on family bond.
The three selected works are "Life Fighter" by HUANG Yu-Wen, which reflects the role and perseverance of traditional women in matrilineal
society; "Dream Deposits" by HUNG Yu-Chiau utilizes screen printing to print on acrylic before shaping it, which is a ground-breaking cubic expression
of soft pillow; "Mute-No. 1" by SU Chin-Sheng presents an unadorned expression.
