Glue Color Painting
Juror's Statement, Glue Color Painting Category KAO Yung-Lung
The number of artworks submitted to the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition sets a new record each year and, among all the categories, Eastern gouache painting
has special significance. It is because Taichung has been the center of transmission, promotion, and education for Eastern gouache painting in Taiwan.
Taichung has the largest amount of Eastern gouache painters and exhibitions and events across Taiwan. It can be said that Eastern gouache painting is the
signature art form of Taichung. In recent years, Eastern gouache painting is developing at a rapid pace and attracts an increasing number of new learners, so
the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition has naturally become the most signi cant event for showcasing works and competing.
Although the special materials and tools required for Eastern gouache painting have long been a limitation to productivity, the number of entries to the
Eastern Gouache Painting Category of the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition continues to grow. This year, we received 56 submissions in total, four of which were
from overseas: two from China and two from Mongolia, suggesting that Eastern gouache painting is no longer a regional but an international art form.
CHAN Chien-Yu, CHANG Jui-Jung, NI Yu-Shan, SUN Yi-Hua, and I served as the jurors for the competition this year. From so many excellent works that
entered the preliminary review, we could only select 9 for the nal review due to the rules set by the organizer. After numerous assessments and discussions,
we nally determined the winners in the Eastern Gouache Painting Category:
The First Prize went to The splendor of sh and owers-Explore by TSAO Cheng-Kai. Despite using common themes in traditional works, gold sh and wisteria,
the artist appropriately employs various kinds of Eastern gouache materials to create a colorful, breathtaking scene. The contrast between bright sunlight and
dark shadows brings the image to life and wakes us up to its intrinsic meaning: the pursuit for spiritual peace amid the rich material life in modern times. The
sophisticated techniques demonstrated in this work won unanimous praise from the judges.
In second place came Calm at dawn by LEE Zhi-Wei. The painting, themed on harvest, re ects the artist's emotions through the scenery of remnant crops
and ponds lled with rainwater. The di erent re ections of light on the water convey a drifting state as well as a sense of gloomy beauty, both implying
the artist's mood. Combining Western techniques of light and shadow with the Asian idea of empty space, the management of lighting variations is truly
successful despite the limited space on this rather small piece.
The Third Prize went to 2019.10.21 by KAO Mei-Chuan, which records the artist's revelations from a trip. In this work, a dialog between Chinese narrative
painting and Japanese decorative aesthetics is established to reflect the craze for Japan in contemporary times. The simple composition on a metal leaf
ground is layered with mineral pigments. The clever use of materials makes this work worthy of detailed appreciation.
The Award of Merit recipient, HSU Wei-Chieh's Carefree and burning, is composed of two works with the theme of adolescent psychology, one of which
is a carefree young man while the other is a youngster self-immolating. Despite depicting di erent actions, the two paintings are headed towards the same
destination: vanishment. It is a novel attempt to explore serious issues in modern society through well-thought-out depiction by Eastern gouache painting.
The Award of Merit recipient, LIN Jyu-Jhen's Floating light and passing shadow, depicts the fantastic sight of a pond, peaceful yet full of life. The changes of
light and shadow make up stirring imagery and the use of color is elegant. However, the composition could have been more uni ed.
This year's submissions displayed diverse techniques, themes, and styles. This is a positive sign for the development of Eastern gouache painting and
shows how this art form has advanced with the times.
