Juror’s Statement, Crafts Category HO Ming-Chyuan

I would like to thank the 21 Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition of Taichung City for inviting me to participate as juror in
the Crafts Category. It has been an honor to witness the host's efforts and I have appreciated the exquisite submissions by
                  dedicated artists.

                             st
The 21 Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition's Crafts Category successfully attracted 102 entries, including seven from
international artists—one each from Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Belarus, India, Vietnam, and Russia. The preliminary

selection picked 15 entries, all from Taiwan. Due to their excellence, all 15 works were awarded in the final selection, earning
the top three prizes, three awards of merit, and nine short listings.

Thanks to the emergence of experience economy and Central Government's efforts on promoting cultural and creative

industries, the attribute of being“handmade”has grown in popularity together with crafts creation. However, time and effort

are required for professional-level crafts. Among the many varieties within this category, porcelain, weaving, metalworking and
mixed media accounted for most submissions this year.

                                                             ,

The first prize-winning work,“Handbag” focuses on bamboo, rattan and leather with a design of overlapping squares
presenting a three-dimensional effect. The bag is made of rattan and the handle is bamboo, with a coat of vivid-colored painting.
“Handbag” is beyond question a wonderful work of art that represents perfection, elegance and refinement. The second prize

went to“Home of Soul”, symbolizing the gate of life, like a warm stream flowing from the heart that allows us to optimistically

face sorrows and joys and bravely march toward the future. This work of freshness and mystery is worth savoring over and over
again. Using a teapot set to express the concept of“tasting tea in a forest”, third prize winner“Light of the Forest”presents the

greenery of a forest on the pot while the cap is hollow, symbolizing sunshine streaming through the leaves. The overall design is
                  simple, yet functional and admirable.
There were five jurors in Crafts Category: HUANG Zhi-Nong, LIOU Chen-Chou, HSIAO Ming-Tun, WANG Mei-Jen,
and me. The judging process went very smoothly and the committee enjoyed a consensus of opinions to offer recognition
and appreciation to the prize-winners. I'd like to encourage all crafts artists and hope for even more submissions next year.

                  Congratulations and best wishes!
