Juror's Statement, Ink Wash Painting Category LO Cheng-Hsien
The great success of the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition lies in the rigorous joint efforts by the organizer and its responsible departments. In
Taiwan, it has been ranked among the top exhibitions and recognized as an international art competition, which certainly provides inspiration and
encouragement to the artists acknowledged in this event.
In the ink wash painting category, artists from five countries submitted a total of 141 works. A wide variety of styles, subjects and methods
figurative, abstract and realism paintings with both traditional and contemporary approaches have been created. Regardless whether it features
pure ink wash, light color or heavy color, each artwork is original in its own unique way. During the preliminary review, five jurors went through
an extensive process to ensure that the artworks' ideas and end results were examined with fairness and impartiality. However, owing to the limited
number of prizes, it is sometimes inevitable that some nice works get passed over, and it's worth noting that how the artworks are presented in photos
affects their fates. The reason is that during the preliminary review, the jurors' judgments are solely based on photos of the paintings in addition to
the expressed concepts. Despise tremendous stress, the jurors exercised their expertise and came to a shared consensus. In the end, small percentages
(15.6%) of the submitted paintings, or 22 out of 141 artworks, were selected to join the final review.
During the final review, jurors were able to appreciate the paintings from a different, up-close perspective. They spent a considerable length
of time pacing back and forth in front of these works before casting their votes for their favorites. Finally, recipients of the three top prizes and four
awards of merits were decided. A brief introduction of the awarded artworks is as follow:
"The Shape of Sound" was selected for the First Prize because of its original structure and immense power, which swiftly illustrate the shape of
sound and silent thoughts with a simple, but powerful, image. The artist, LEE Yao-Chen, demonstrates superior ink employment skills.
The Second Prize went to "Time Passes Like Flowing Water" by LAI Cheng-Yu. This rather creative piece integrates elements of Western and
Eastern cultural backgrounds and the contrasting setting of ancient and modern times, interpreting the melancholy state of a young lady's mind.
LIAO Sna-Bor's "First Sino-Japanese War" was awarded the Third Prize. Staggering piles of newspaper exhaust even the kitten, which tried
to get to the bottom and seek the truth, in this ingenious mockery of the famous Chinese saying, "A scholar doesn't need to step outside his house to
keep abreast of updates of the world."
Four awards of merit went respectively to LIN Yu-Chun's "Cycle", TU Sheng-Chiun's "White Space", SU Yi-Wen's "Be Called and Be Chosen"
and YU Tzu-Wei's "Survival in Dangerous Times". Each piece is special and unique in expressing its message via the abstract, figurative or objects.
The Da Dun Prize is the supreme award of this exhibition. Only the top prizewinners from all categories are qualified to compete for this
ultimate honor. Three additional artworks must be presented from each candidate in addition to the first-prize-winning piece to seize this prize. Under
the highly critical and scrutinizing eyes of all jurors, it's extremely difficult to stand out from among the rest. This year, five First Prize artists out of
11 were selected to receive the Da Dun Prize. I'd like to congratulate those five artists whose hard work was noticed and rightfully recognized, and
take this opportunity to encourage the highly competent but unfortunate other artists to continue their great work. The door of glory will always be
open for those who are fully prepared.
The whole process of each review stage and the awards ceremony are scrupulously, carefully and impressively carried out. This event represents
Taichung's strenuous efforts to expand the space for creation, as well its sincere respect for the artists who share in spreading the glory of art in our
surroundings. This helps the public to cultivate an artistic interest and improve their knowledge of art, contributing directly to creating a peaceful
living environment and modern society with a wonderful spirit. This is indeed a marvelous art event.
