Description
Deng Shi-Ru (1743-1805) is known as a poet
whose unique script style greatly influenced
the development of calligraphy. However,
people usually look at his disadvantaged
background and low social status rather
than his work. Because Deng did not receive
a formal education, some people criticize
his works as displaying less literary sense. I
personally disagree with this point of view.
Studying is not the most important factor for
positively influencing calligraphy. The most
crucial thing I read in Deng’s works is his
unique style, which was inspired by nature
and became a very important example to
subsequent generations. To me, Deng is truly a
master of calligraphy.
