Juror's Statement, O il Painting Category Ho, Chau-Chu

Jurors for the 18 Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition of Taichung City included instructors Lee Yung-Han, Wang Shou-Ying, Wang Chiung-Li, Lee,
Chu-Hsin and me. The first phase of the preliminary review was based on photographs of original paintings, of which 47 works were nominated.
These included four submissions from abroad (one each from Germany and Thailand and two from India).
For the final review, all 47 nominated paintings were physically present. First, second and third prizes were awarded, an Award of Merit was
given to five other candidates, and another 39 paintings were short-listed. Among the foreign submissions, the painting from Thailand won an
Award of Merit and the Indian and German works were short-listed.
In the oil painting category, First Prize goes to Yang, Yi-Shiang for The Perfect Prototype 120403 , which applies acrylic-based paint to
the canvas. This work s poetic theme holds that, Perhaps every single footprint stands for the creation of vocabulary, which then hides memories
in it. Nothing is eternal under every light beam. The longest object is nothing but a glance. The work is sophisticated and realistic and its outline
and colors are perfect. There is also a series of three smaller paintings submitted to win the Da Dun Prize and despite the explanations relevant to
the painting series, their style differs greatly from the large award-winning work and represents another feeling. However, both types of paintings
stand a chance to win the Da Dun Prize.
Second Prize went to Hsu, Yin-Cheng for Shipbreaking Yards . Using gray blue, earthy yellow and auburn red as main hues, the painting
illustrates the dusty work area where large ships are suspended, broken up and bulldozed. This painting applies cold, warm, hollow and full
painting touches to express the intensity and tension of the image, demonstrating the painter s sophisticated and unrestricted painting skills.
Su, Shu-Min s Window Display won the Third Prize. The painter explains that the work features the colorful shop windows, embellished
with periodic reflections of street views, spicing up the scene with urban chic . The painter also uses warm color tones and manipulates spatial
illustrations.
Chang, Ying-Pin s Mangrove Imprint won an Award of Merit and boldly disassembles and reconstructs different colors and lines. With
an appropriate manipulation of aesthetics, this painting creates spatial layers to adorn the image with and accentuate its ambience, making it a
wonderful work.
Chien, Shih-Che described his work A Deep Feeling by noting that this painting applies an abstract style and subjective colors to express
strong inner passion as it seeks an empathetic response from viewers.
Ho, Huei-Shan s An Aria for Summer illustrates an image reminiscent of Venice s canals, a bold expression with a sharp contrast of colors.
The theme and thought behind this female painter s work merits approval.
Lin, Zheng-Jie s The Blue Music of Nights applies multiple images and connotations to interpret sexual desire as well as the anxiety
and unease of fleeting youth, contemplated late at night. These sentiments result from a visual influx of expectations for hope and a craving
for freedom. It is the miraculous blue music of nights that comes from one s dreams and mind, making it a very explanatory work. Susu
Pianchupattana s The Visitor is from Thailand and its size of 152× 127 centimeters is equivalent to a size 80 oil painting. This painting uses
the images of multiple people and bodies to construct a fabulous work. The warm color tones and lone animated outlines of human bodies make
this a subtropical, exotic creation. In the future, we hope to see more foreign participants join this event, allowing us to learn about different
countries cultures and different atmospheres.
Many great works were chosen this year. However, because this is a contest, there were some that could not be nominated, which is truly a
pity. The Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition of Taichung City has been well-hosted each year and continues to earn tremendous approval, which we are
grateful for!
