Entering its 30 year, the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition has long accumulated abundant artistic energy. This year, the Cultural

Arts Exhibition of Taichung City 30 Anniversary: Masters’ Works Special Exhibition” in November. Through these events, friends
from Taiwan and abroad can witness together the results of 30 years of dedication.
When the exhibition was first launched in 1996, Taichung City was responding to the Council for Cultural Affairs’ (Executive
Yuan) policy of the “National Festival of Culture and Arts,” during which local fine arts exhibitions flourished across the country.
Over the past three decades, many of these local exhibitions have expanded or transformed, while the Da Dun Fine Arts
Exhibition has found its footing, gradually growing from a local art show into a national competition, and further expanding into an
international open call. Today, the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition has become the government-organized art competition with the
largest scale and the highest total prize money in Taiwan, and is regarded as one of the nation’s most representative art contests.
The total prize money for the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition reaches NT$5.69 million. The highest honor, the Da Dun Prize, grants
the winner NT$380,000 (including NT$180,000 for First Prize and NT$200,000 for collection acquisition), with the winning artwork
being collected by the Cultural Affairs Bureau. Each year, through substantial rewards, the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition encourages
artists from Taiwan and abroad to unleash their creativity and continue producing outstanding works, and further promotes
                               international cultural exchange.
For the 30 Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition, after rigorous preliminary and final reviews, 182 winning works were selected from

a total of 1,345 entries, which was no easy task. This year’s prize-winning works challenge the senses of both judges and viewers
with their technical mastery and creativity. For example, the First Prize in the Watercolor Painting Category, “In the Dream”by WU
Wei-Hao, is rendered in dark tones, departing from the common impression of watercolors as transparent and light. The First
Prize in Oil Painting, “Coexistence” by CHU Hsuan, depicts twisted, climbing dead branches in gray-scale tones, conveying both
the fragility and resilience of life. The First Prize in Printmaking, “Mute NO-8” by SU Chin-Sheng, uses wood fragments to present
pieces of nature’s memory, placing the “silence” of flocks of birds within the work.
The winning works of the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of artistic achievement.
Congratulations to all the prized winners on their honors, and thanks to every participant who has walked with us over these 30
years, witnessing with us the history of the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition at this speical milestone. Da Dun will continue to strive
forward, accompanying the development of Taiwanese culture and advancing hand in hand with our artists.
