“South of the river is where lotus flowers are
collected. Among the dense lotus leaves, fish
swim and play.” In hot summer days, all creatures
shy away from the sun, but lotus leaves thrive in
the pond. In the water below, fish have become
livelier because of the green leaves. The summer
exudes vitality. The artist uses green tone to
represent summer, and the painting focuses on
lotus flowers, with weaving lines among color
blocks outlining the shapes of the leaves. The
curves underneath imply the playful fish, whereas
the two straight lines and seedpods on the left
balance the entire scene.
