Juror's Statement LIN Chin-Chung
Participation in the Ink Wash Category of the 27th Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition was quite enthusiastic; a total of 163 entries were submitted
(among which seven entries were from overseas), and they were all excellent expressions. This year’s review was conducted by five jurors, LEE Ku-
Mo, TSAI Yuo, YUAN Chin-Taa, LIN Chang -Hu, and myself. The preliminary selection was based on submitted pictures and documents, where
each juror selected half the entries base on own preferences first, and then their votes were tallied to rank the entries; after a few rounds of selection,
the jury finally selected the 24 shortlisted entries according to the competition rules. In the final review, the jury reviewed originals of the shortlisted
entries, and narrowed down the field to 23 Shortlisted Works; after a few rounds of selection and further narrowing down the pool, the jury finally
selected four Award of Merit winners and the top three prize winners. The works selected to this year’s exhibition showcase diverse painting styles,
and excellent ink wash painting techniques; these exciting works also display the authors’ spirits and are highly admirable.
First Prize went to Bamboo Forest Vitality – 2 by KANG Xing-Long, which depicts the joyous scene of flying birds in a bamboo forest. Through
vivid and meticulous realist depiction, the artist presents a coherent painting with vibrant brushstrokes. With thoughtful composition, the artist
reveals own inner world, and his innovative forms further manifest the vitality and energy of the painting.
The Second Prize-winning work is ZHANG Mei-Ling’s The Beauty of the Snake King, which depicts an imagined scene, and the figures are
placed in a natural and orderly fashion. The figures are vivid and lively, and the plants and leaves are well placed. The expression is unadorned and
honest, and the brushstrokes create a sense of stability and leisure, presenting a relaxing and lively scene.
Guard’s Spring by WANG Yi-Ting is the winner of Third Prize. The expressive painting depicts an imagined scene, featuring a wide range of
objects in the background to accentuate the girl standing on a pile of books. The painting reflects the artist’s inner thoughts and emotions, and the
depictions of the forms and objects are well executed, creating a thoughtful composition.
Award of Merit – Face 3 by KUO Tien-Chung features a three-tiered composition with fine and meticulously vivid depictions of a puppy in front
of a waterfall. The background features pure ink wash expression created through brilliant techniques. Award of Merit – The Hermit by CHANG
Ya-Chen features a composition of multidimensional spaces, describing the changing emotions in living environment. The forms are fluid and free,
exhibiting a subdued bleakness. Award of Merit – Pupa Sail by HSIEH Jia-Rung expresses a fantasy world of flying butterflies in her dreams; the
corresponding placements of the rocks and boat are subtle, consolidating the unworldly ambience. Award of Merit – Mountain Road by GAO Ding
captures the tranquil and lasting presence of mountains, and emphasizes variations in consistency; the brushstrokes and ink lines are smooth and
unadorned, creating a uniquely captivating style. All sixteen Shortlisted Works also exhibit great diversity and brilliance, where the artists’ mastery
over their crafts are evident; volumes and voids, and shades of ink, are all in harmony, and the colors are elegant, showing that the artists not only
carry on the traditions but also strive for innovations.
Ink wash painting is an excellent tradition of the Oriental culture and art. Dots, strokes, and lines have own aesthetic natures, creating diverse
and rich variations, and lasting styles. It is an art that constructs the lineage of cultural expressions. Ink wash paintings at Da Dun Fine Arts
Exhibition adhere to the essence of art and pursue reinvention of traditions for innovations, transcending the boundaries of disciplines, media, and
styles, and exhibiting the spirit of lasting traditions with unique and diverse styles. The works capture temporal charms, and express the diversity and
beauty of contemporary ink wash art. Artists have own creative philosophies and personal expressions, and showcase unique personal features and
styles, presenting works of ink wash painting that construct scenes through ink expressions.
