Juror's Statement CHIEH Chia-Chu
Taichung City’s Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition stands out among domestic government-run exhibitions as it has achieved an international
reputation. This year, the exhibition received a total of 89 overseas submissions from 18 countries, among which, 13 were watercolor paintings.
This was truly noteworthy. This year’s Watercolor Painting Category received a total of 142 submissions, and 24 paintings were selected in the
preliminary review; 22 works made it into the final review, where the jury selected winners of the top three prizes, four Award of Merit winners, and
12 Shortlisted Works.
First Prize went to WANG Shao-Fu’s After the Catastrophe. The painting shows the artist’s concern for the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2019,
which has affected global economy, and gratitude towards medical professionals for their contributions. The large-size painting demonstrates good
will and captures a heart-warming scene.
The Second Prize winner is Calm by HU Shian-Wen, which is an expressive portrait; the artist masterfully captures the expressions of the girl in
the painting, and uses simple yet effective colors to further accentuate the theme.
Third Prize was given to Far Away Silence by CHANG Hong-Bin. The artist hopes to find an alternative life direction in the enclosed life through
the guidance of nature; the painting features diverse techniques, and the layering effect is outstanding, giving the painting robust vitality and energy.
Award of Merit winner, Street View by HSU Wen-Chang, presents an expression of woven shadows of busy people in the streets under the bright
sun, who spare no time to stop their feet. The artist expresses street view and characters through overlapping shadows, and creates an outstanding
spatial expression. Award of Merit winner, Ideal World – I by WU Chen-Lin, presents a unique metaphor, in which the wonderful virtual world
where plants never wither transforms into the senseless real environment.
Border, the Award of Merit winning painting by LO Yu-Cheng, expresses the beauty of listening to the waves and enjoying the breezes by the
shore at night, and presents an outstanding creative idea. Another Award of Merit winner is Mei-Nung Feelings by CHEN Hsieh-Chang, in which
the artist creates a nostalgic expression of the East Gate Tower in Meinong through lively and vibrant techniques.
Taichung City’s Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition regularly calls for submissions every year from April 1 to 15. We look forward to continued
participation of more watercolorists, so we can all immerse in the great joy of painting.
