With forward-looking vision, Taichung City Government has born the torch of art and inheritance,
and independently organized Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition for 24 years. After Taiwan Provincial Fine Arts
Exhibition became history with the downsizing of the provincial government, Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition
has become another large-scale stage for artists to exchange and interact, and thrive and succeed. Over the
years, with great effort of the city government and participation of artists, Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition has
transformed from a regional art competition into an international exchange platform of art. What a feat!
Maintaining the scale of the previous edition, Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition features eleven categories
this year: ink wash painting, calligraphy, seal engraving, glue color painting, oil painting, watercolor
painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, crafts, and digital art, and has received as many as 1,318
submissions, attracting domestic artworks from Taiwan, as well as 91 overseas submissions from 20
countries including Mainland China, Japan, UK, and France.
The preparation of Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition was meticulous. From announcing the call for
submissions in early February to the revealing of winners in late June, the preliminary and inal review
processes in between took as long as several months; for each category, experts of related ields have been
recruited to serve on the jury. The irst-phase document review selected 200 works, and the shortlisted
works then entered the second-phase, original work review, where top three prize-winners in each
category, winners of award of merit, and shortlisted works—a total of 191 works—were chosen, including
15 works by foreign artists. Furthermore, in July, ive works were chosen from the top prize-winners of all
the categories and received the highest honor “Da Dun Award.” All the review results have been sealed and
safely kept until the award ceremony.
Overall speaking, participating works in the categories this year demonstrate diverse styles and
outstanding techniques, display powerful personal colors and emotional expressions, and re lect and
ponder on modern environment and lifestyle. Outstanding works have also attained balance between
topic and technique. We look forward for these talented artists to continue their paths in art, bringing new
outlooks to Taiwan’s cultural and artistic environment. Through the organization of the annual Da Dun
Fine Arts Exhibition, we aim to bring together more elite artists, and continue presenting the beauty of
contemporary arts.
