Juror’s Statement, Glue Color Painting Category CHAN Chien-Yu

The 21 Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition of Taichung City Glue Color Painting category collected 34 submissions, including six from
foreign artists—three from China (including Hong Kong) and one each from Canada, Turkey and Japan. LIN Po-Ting, KAO Yung-Lung,

LIOU Ling-Li, CHANG Chen-Wen and I were the five jurors and eight submissions were picked in the preliminary selection on May 15,
followed by a fi nal selection that selected top three prize winners, two Award of Merit winners, and three short-listed works. Compared with
last year, it was noteworthy that this year's works as well as contemporary thinking showed a slight improvement.

LAN Yin-Wei's first-prize winner,“Dreams and Reality”, showcases a section of stairs in a vintage western chateau. Lan utilizes black
foil and mineral pigments to express vicissitudes of time, and uses the mysterious refl ection of lights to present the confl ict between dreams
and reality, focusing on the issue of whether antique buildings should be repaired. This is a work filled with humanity and history.

Second prize goes to CHEN Wei-Wen's“Beauty after Age” with only one withered sunflower arranged in the painting. Chen uses
                                                                        ,

blossoming and withering of fl owers to imply the ups and downs of life. The arrangement is rather simple, although the presentation of the
theme and background colors is so rich and harmonious that it brings out the beauty of life that is fading away.

HUANG Shih-Chang's“Lost”claimed third Prize. Puddled roads on a grey rainy day creates a strange, disquieted atmosphere and
reflects the melancholy of youth and their hesitation toward the environments they live in, seeing no prosperous future but only bitterness

               and confusion.

Two works recognized with an Award of Merit are HSU Yu-Hsin's“Lost in Sweets”and HUANG Ching-Chun's“Steps”“Lost
                                                                                                                                .
in Sweets”is filled with colorful sweets and is inspired by“Hansel and Gretel” presenting lost hamsters with sweet colors implying
                                                                                       ,

surrounding temptations. This gives this painting a child-like aesthetic. In“Steps”, a pretty girl sits on a fence, recalling the sorrow of a
first romance. This work shows excellent ideas and techniques. However, it is a pity that the spatial implication of the legs hidden behind

printed cloth seems to be defective.
Most of the above prize winners were created by young students between the ages of 22 and 30. The sensitive visual experience they
offer together with contemporary painting styles reflect how modern artists, born into this era of media and information explosions and after

receiving an art education, begin contemplating ways to present contemporary art and developing their own techniques and styles. Glue
color painting has evolved from earlier themes such as beautiful women, flowers and birds to spotlight brand-new themes.
