M ayor’ s Statement

Culture reflects a group of people who share similar beliefs. In other words, it is the sum of human experience. At the
same time, art is the result of human emotion and thinking, making it the most important facet in the development of culture.
Art can be presented in a broad variety of forms, including painting, music, dance, literature, technology and so on.
Taichung has the goal of developing itself into a creative, cultural and energetic metropolis that is based on the arts as
well as low-carbon and intelligent-city principles. With developments covering projects such as an international-standard
metropolitan opera house, professional baseball stadium, modern office buildings and preservation of historical sites,
Taichung provides a diverse blend of the old and new, of local and global visions. Culture is the main focus for promoting
Taichung, making it a crucial factor when marketing the city internationally. This June, Taichung received an Intelligent
Community of the Year award in a tremendous step for us. I have used culture and technology to provide residents with a
better quality of life and, in doing so, believe that Taichung is well on its way to becoming a wonderful place to live in.
Among a number of annual art events, the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition of Taichung City is an especially notable
platform for artists, being a global event that offers a fantastic stage for not only Taiwanese artists but also those from abroad.
                            th
The 18 Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition of Taichung City received a total of 1,739 submissions from all over the world and,
following an initial round of judging, a record-breaking total of 134 works from other countries were among those selected
                      for the final round.

In addition, we have witnessed how diligently the exhibition team worked during the competition. Artists strived to
achieve their best as they participated in the competition while specialists from different areas contributed their efforts and
supported the review processes. So many people worked very hard on this event and I believe it will continue to improve with
the passage of time as we stay abreast of positive developments in the global art world.

While artists are concerned about tradition, their works can also show innovation, resulting in outstanding pieces. Driven
to fulfill their dreams, participating artists undoubtedly worked very hard on their works before submitting them, and I believe
that audience members who love art will understand the work that the creators invested. Among all submitted works, a total of
226 received awards as top representations of creativity and excellent aesthetics. This exhibition promises to offer viewers not
only an amazing experience but also the thrill of imagination.

I would like to invite all art lovers to come and experience this excellent event between October 26 and November 13,
2013 at the Taichung City Dadun Cultural Center. It is truly one more richly-attractive destination as you explore this city
                      during the autumn.
