Director's Preface
The Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition is celebrating its 30th anniversary! To review and document the
development and transformation of artistic creation over these three decades, the Cultural Affairs Bureau
has specially curated the “Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition of Taichung City 30th Anniversary: Masters’ Works
Special Exhibition,” and invited renowned art historian Professor HSIAO Chong-Ray to serve as the
curator. Through his careful research on the history of the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition and its award-
winning works, we hope that this special exhibition will allow citizens not only to experience the power of
art and enrich their spirits but also to understand the artistic trajectory shaped by the times.
Established in 1996, the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition has evolved from a local showcase into an
internationally recognized juried competition. This year marks its 30th edition. Over the years, aspects
such as award structures, prize amounts, application methods, and judging procedures have all evolved
in response to the changing times. This special exhibition presents more than 150 works that have
received the "Da Dun Prize" and are now part of the Bureau’s collection. The “Da Dun Prize” is granted
to five outstanding works selected from the first-place winners across different categories. Not only do
recipients receive a significant cash prize, but their artworks are also archived by the Bureau. These
works are the very best of the best, and citizens are treated to a visual feast at this special exhibition. In
recent years, the international open call has attracted talented artists from abroad, and some have even
received the prestigious Da Dun Prize in recognition of their excellence.
The Greater Taichung area is rich in culture and home to a vibrant and diverse array of artistic
activities. It continually fosters talented creators. Building upon this strong foundation, the Cultural Affairs
Bureau is proud to play a role in enhancing and promoting the local arts environment. In addition to
optimizing facilities, we hold various art competitions every year. Among them, the Da Dun Fine Arts
Exhibition, as an iconic art competition in Taiwan, is a vital platform for artists to showcase their skills and
unique styles, as well as an important source of creative energy and nourishment for this city’s cultural
landscape.
Over the past thirty years, the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition has nurtured numerous influential artists
who continue to push their creative boundaries and produce remarkable work. Upholding the same
pioneering spirit, the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition reflects on its journey over the past three decades
while also looking toward the future, continuously building a platform that inspires broader participation in
artistic creation.
