This year’s Printmaking category received 53 entries. Overseas submissions doubled from the year before to reach eight, which
came from different countries. Due to the requirement of the number of exhibits, the jury could only select eight works in the
preliminary review; the jury evaluated framed originals in the final review, and this was when we could perceive the artists’ intents
through the creative ambitions and pictorial tensions displayed by the works. The five jurors evaluated the works independently
and then exchanged thoughts to finally select top three prize winners, two Award of Merit winners, and three Short Lists. The
winners of the First Prize and Second Prize were the same from the previous year, as they came back with new works that once
again earned unanimous approval of the jury. Notably, the Third Prize winner moved up a level after earning a selection last year,
and the jury felt happy for him.
The First Prize went to TUNG Chuen-Yu’s “55 Dress Up NO.3”, which utilized screen printing to transfer the image onto a metal
plate, creating a unique visual effect distinct from paper-based works. The creative theme expresses various stages of life to
interpret the roles of different identities through constant evolution of external appearances, while also using elements of costume
design and images of plants and animals as projections in the transitions between roles, revealing subtle metaphorical meanings.
The Second Prize went to “Existence—W#22.” Artist KIM Hyun-Jin utilized the method of woodcut single print copies to express
the distinctive carve marks of relief printing, and explore the life experience of own existence through creation. The print features
strong color contrasts to highlight the figures, and uses human and animal imagery to draw analogies to the relationship with
the living environment, illustrating how otherwise independent individuals are interdependent. The artist skillfully uses repeated
carving and color layering to create rich color variations.
The Third Prize winner was “Mute No. 4” by SU Chin-Sheng. The artist used plastic plate and woodcut for multiple plate printing.
The creative theme circles on his concerns for environmental issues and uses the ecosystem of birds as the main construct. We all
fight for own survival and continuation of life, and through the postures and chirping of the birds, we seem to be able to hear their
soundless songs in vacuum. The print features well-arranged composition full of expressive power, which was why it earned the
recognition of the jury.
Award of Merit-winning “Riverside Walk” by LIN Jan-Chin uses screen printing to combine pictorial narrative with color
arrangement for a complete composition. The artist gathered elements of landscape to trigger people’s resonances with fragments
of the traveler’s memory, aiming to express the different visual appearances resulted from spatial imageries.
“Loving Kindness” is another winner of the Award of Merit. Artist CHANG Chieh-Lung adopted the polychrome register method,
which is quite difficult in terms of carving and printing. The creative process is quite challenging from planning of colors, carving,
control of ink printing, and color registration. The author represents the scenes in memory through printmaking, attempting to
share with viewers the sweet feeling through depiction of fragments of life with family.
The three Short Lists are: “Hide and Seek in the Maze” by TANG Pei-Yun, adopting the wood engraving method (relief) to
compare personified sparrows to modern people lost in society; “Alice After 38 Years Old” by WANG Yi-Pin expresses the different
stages of a woman growing up through woodcut (relief) printing; “Follow the Trend” by KAO Chun-Ying expresses own life view
through paper intaglio, conveying the values of self-reflection and listening to the inner voice.
