Mayor's Preface
Blessed with ideal geographical location and wonderful climate throughout the seasons, Taichung city is a gathering place of
talented artists, and has accumulated over the years its rich cultural foundation, earning it the title of “City of Culture.” In recent
years, Taichung City Government has actively organized various cultural and arts events, and networked with the international
community through the soft strengths of culture and arts, such as the city’s continued promotion of Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition
over the past 27 years. Since its inception in 1996, the exhibition has gradually grown from a local exhibition calling for submissions
from Taichung into a national exhibition, and finally the international competition that calls entries from around the world today.
Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition gathers domestic and overseas artists to build the most important stage of exchange where they can
learn from and compete with each other.
After the grave challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic over the past three years, Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition is still able to
receive 1,300 entries from 19 countries this year, among which, 89 entries are creative works submitted from overseas. After two
rounds of judgement in May and June, a total of 193 brilliant entries have emerged as winners. Examining this year’s winners,
there are several outstanding artists who have participated in the competition for years, such as First Prize-winners in a number of
categories: LIU Chun-nan in Seal Engraving, LEE Ying-jung in Digital Art, WANG Shao-fu in Watercolor Painting, and KANG
Xing-long in Ink Wash Painting, which shows that these artists’ creative sparks remain strong through the pandemic, as they
continue to refine their drafts and achieve breakthroughs. Their resilient creative energy is truly respectable, and we thank all the
artists for enthusiastic participation and support year after year, driving Taichung City’s lasting development of art.
Overseas artists are also creative forces to be reckoned with. This year, participants from Japan and Mongolia have won
Second Prize in Seal Engraving and Award of Merit in Oil Painting respectively. The exhibition has long promoted the culture of
“Da Dun” overseas, and facilitated the “Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition of Taichung City Joint Exhibition of Nominated Artists from
Mongolia and Taiwan” co-organized by Taipei Trade and Economic Representative Office in Ulaanbaatar, Mongol Art Gallery,
and Taichung City Government, this April. The exhibition was held at Mongol Art Gallery, showcasing the artistic fruits nurtured
by Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition over the years, and jumpstarting the dialogue of cultural exchange and interaction between the
two countries.
Art cultivates the spirit and cleanses the mind, inspiring activities of different sectors and elevating the entire society culturally.
Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition timely plays a facilitating and bridging role to charge ahead with creative talents, collectors, cultural
business owners, and all art-loving friends, jointly building a wonderful cultural and art environment. On the day of this year’s
award ceremony, five “Da Dun Prize” winners will be unveiled, symbolizing the highest honor and recognition of Da Dun Fine
Arts Exhibition. We encourage all award-winners to persist on, continually refining their crafts and learning from and encouraging
each other.
