Juror's Statement, Printmaking Category CHUNG You-Hui

A total of 11 works were shortlisted for the Printmaking Category of the 26th Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition. Although it is not an impressive number, the
overall quality is high. Below are some comments on the prize-winning works:
The winner of First Prize is Wizard's home, a brilliant reduction print by Muran, a senior printmaker. The reworks spit by the bottle lift the curtain on the
show, burning volcanic ash falls from the showerhead, and the shell ginger, twisting like a snake, bears uorescent crystals. The warm interior of the house
allures the persimmon tree out in the snow. Disorder and absurdity embody the principle of action through inaction, nature's signature move. The dark blue
and orange colors inside the house contrast with the wintry bleakness outside. This is a remarkable work both in terms of conception and techniques.
The Second Prize winner, Wave of changes by Spanish artist Juan Carlos Escudero Garcia, is a relief etched print where precise ne lines are etched with the
aid of a computer to present a process relating to the organization of living systems and a way to coexist with nature. Intense attention and focus are required
while drawing on the plate to produce strokes with such precision.
The Third Prize winner is HUANG De-Cheng's Day alternates with night -- night, a print etched with chine collé. The composition looks as if one is viewing
the outside from a window. In the dark night, ripples on the water re ect the bright, silvery moon. Below, a breeze rustles over the empty grassland in the
wake of dawn, with no one else around. The whole print is handled carefully and properly, thereby allowing viewers to listen quietly to the rustling grass.
One of the two winners of the Award of Merit, Existence-W#8 by KIM Hyun-Jin, is a reduction print. For the artist, creation enables him to listen to his heart
when alone, prompting his inner voice to speak out. The artist ponders over his own existence by establishing a connection with grass and other life forms.
Another Award of Merit recipient is Unknown sustainability by LIN Kuan-Pin, who uses both intaglio and relief printing to depict an old house, suggesting
that although our daily moments are brief and eeting, they can endure when made into images. The artist's passion for art and pro cient skills are apparent,
and the characteristics of the building are shown clearly by making the image deeper on the upper part while shallower on the lower part.
