Description
"Cage homes" first emerged in the 1950s. Due to
the Chinese Civil War, many refugees arrived in
Hong Kong. The rich possessed mansions, whereas
the low-level laborers could only ght for survival
in the harshest conditions. To fully utilize every
inch of space, iron cages were placed in rooms,
and loaned to people as bed spaces, becoming
what have since been known as "cage homes."
The work shows overlapped bird cages. People are
trapped inside, and seemingly no struggling to get
out. Compared to the canary outside the cages,
the image is truly ironic. The woman with peony
growing out of her face and birdcage covering it
is a symbol of a greenhouse ower. She knows not
and cares not about the difficult life outside the
cage. ซ࠭ Want to Flyā172Ò143cm
