The purpose of education is cultivating intelligent and educated citizens. And the best way to achieve this goal is through art. The
government has been organizing many exhibitions to promote art appreciation and foster a creative atmosphere a long term goal that
will slowly blossom. For 19 years now, the Taichung City Government's Cultural Affairs Bureau has been holding the Da Dun Fine Arts
Exhibition of Taichung City, first as a local exhibition and later as a globally-promoted international art competition. This transformation
came about because the bureau wanted to expand its horizons, and artists now anticipate this event every year.
This year, we received a total of 133 works, including 15 pieces from overseas--seven from Malaysia, one from Hong Kong, China,
two from Sri Lanka, and one each from Belize, the Philippines, El Salvador, India and United States. Twenty artworks entered the first
review stage, including five international submissions, a quarter of the total. For the final stage of judging, HUANG Jin-Long, LIN Wei-
Min, CHUANG Ming-Chung, CHEN Wen-Long and I were the jurors. After several discussions and rounds of voting, we finally selected
the top three works, with four other artists receiving awards of merit and another 13 being short-listed.
First Prize went to "Crying" by TSAI Yuan-Huan. The structure, shape and color are quite skillfully created and have a unique
expression and exploratory self-awareness. The artist drew with a water-borne acrylic, although this artwork lacks the characteristics of
watercolors. As the first-prize winner in the watercolor category, this work will also compete for Da Dun Prize (announced during the
awards ceremony). Let's see whether it can win the prize!
Second Prize was awarded to "New 'Era of Idols' " by CHIANG Fu-Wan. This artwork uses an interface of new media and digital
video with watercolors to portray the folded and synchronic characteristics of digital video. It ironically expresses the social phenomenon
of pursuing fashion among a new generation, with this concept and presentation giving the work its meaning.
Third Prize winner "Lotus" by YANG Jyh-Woei uses a lotus as a focus to describe the artist's inner heart. This artist is good at using
watercolor blending and the composition is of this work is abundant, demonstrating a top-quality color range and painting technique.
Among the artworks earning awards of merit, "Fishing Village No. 49-Inseparable" by LIM Bee-Tat, a Malaysian artist, shows a
delicate and mild realistic technique. "The Playmates" by XIAO Yu-Tong has fluid brushwork, giving it a spiritual feeling and making
it interesting and experimental. "Flower Grave", painted by CHANG Lih-Shin, shows the circle of life as flowers reach full bloom, and
is an exquisite, gorgeous work. "Painting Diary", by WU Jyh-Horng, uses the simplest style to illustrate the interest in painting while
reorganizing shape, color and space.
The above-noted artworks show better composition, so I briefly introduced these among the submissions. I hope that you will visit
and experience each work and all the different styles represented.
