For Award of Merit winning works, Tu Ya-Wen s The Universe is quite an interesting piece, although the best part of this
work is the loop section. Despite having good-quality illustrations, it could still be recognized as a static illustration album unless
you watch the loop section. With regard to illustrations, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy is quite a good example. In 1930, he published the
book Vision in Motion which soon became popular and brought a new era to animation production. His theories have been an
important inspiration ever since, with Vision in Motion being used as the title of numerous exhibitions and books discussing digital
art.
Han Hoogerbrugge is another excellent example. This Dutch digital artist started out as a painter and cartoonist before studying
Flash software programs. This offered him a new medium to work in and he started creating GIF animation that used looping to
a great extent. Hoogerbrugge s GIF work became popular and well-known on the Internet, and he is good at presenting art pieces
using sounds and actions, rarely using the spoken word in his animations. Hoogerbrugge s pieces convey the humor of anxiety and
seriousness. He received an Honorable Award at the Austrian Digital Art Festival and has exhibited eight times in France and three
times in Taiwan.
III. Static works are good or bad?
Unfortunately, we did not award candidates who submitted static pieces this year. The reason that static art pieces were rejected
is that the design and printmaking categories already offer opportunities for static artwork, meaning that we were therefore unable
to accept such pieces in our category. Hopefully, we will receive a more diverse range of pieces for consideration next year. I tried to
persuade other jurors to focus on the technique of each submitted work when judging for the Da Dun Prize. Digital art, especially 3-D
art, normally takes a long time and very high skill levels to produce and artists who create it often get too little sleep. Other jurors
and I are looking forward to seeing digital art awarded among the top five Da Dun Prizes. This year, Da Dun Prize jurors have done
their best for the digital art category, and judging required a lot of time and patience from them. It is difficult to assess the merits of
digital art, a medium that takes a long time to either produce or review!
The submissions mainly focus on static illustrations that can be different from traditional hand-drawn illustrations. The key
point when reviewing static pieces is whether the pieces present digital characteristics or not. The methodology for producing
static illustrations can be diverse. For example, tools such as digital panels and digital pens are useful for producing digital art.
That presents work of quite a different style from traditional illustrations. In terms of colors, digital colors allow for 16,777,216
(256x256x256) possibilities, so it is flexible and full of choices. Humans are able to recognize more than 10 billion colors. Digital
art can easily satisfy human eyes and excite our vision. However, as it cannot be presented with paper and printers, monitors are
very important to digital art. Liquid crystal painting is an example which explains the digital skill of painting. A good example is the
artist Tu Ya-Wen who received Merit Award for her work The Universe , which presents the loop style very well. In addition, the
emerging technology of 3-D printing is also a method worth considering. As long as 3-D files for printing are of good quality, the
final models can be very finely detailed and, although they are static works, they can have great artistic merit. So who says that static
pieces do not work very well?
