Juror's Statement, G lue Color Painting Category Chen, Ying-Wen
Thanks to the promotion of the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition of Taichung City and outstanding works received from the glue color painting
artists, Taichung has the highest number of practicing glue color painting artists in Taiwan. Unlike many other Taiwan art exhibitions, this
exhibition includes among its categories glue color painting, which has gradually grown in popularity. Consequently, an increasing number
of artists are participating in this singular art event. Competition is increasing and so are the standards of submitted works. There were 59
submissions this year, 12 more than the last year, including two pieces submitted from Hong Kong.
Glue color painting originated in Japan, which was certainly influenced by China during the Tang, Song and Yuan dynasties, but managed
to integrate its own culture and customs with such influences to develop its own unique styles. After World War II, glue color painting took on
different names in different countries, such as Japanese painting in Japan, color painting in Korea, rock color painting or heavy color
painting in China, and glue color painting in Taiwan. Although Japanese and Korean artists have participated in this exhibition s competitions,
they have never done so in the glue color painting category. I sincerely hope to see more wonderful artists from other places take part in this great
event so we can all learn from each other.
We, the jurors Lee Chen-Hui, Liu Ling-Li, Kao Yung-Lung, Zheng Ying-Lin and I have invested tremendous effort into ensuring the fair
and open awarding of prizes. During the preliminary review, we selected eight outstanding artworks out of 59 for the final review, where we voted
for the top three prizes, two awards of merit and three short-listed works. I d like to take this opportunity to offer special congratulations to Hong
Kong artist Zhang Dan, who won Second Prize. It is indeed a great honor to have her join the Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition of Taichung City.
First Prize was awarded to Wu Jin-Hsien s What about Our Hearts? Utilizing silk as a base, the artist applied numerous kinds of mineral
.
paints to create a depth of space, highlighting her concept of the growing distance among people s hearts . Her delicate, intricate touch
exquisitely and successfully captures cold, metal modern devices and the fine details of human features. The lonely atmosphere created by
invisible walls between human beings is also subtly conveyed.
Second Prize went to Hong Kong artist Zhang Dan. Her winning piece, Narcissus , fully embodies an illustration-like approach. The
allegorical style with pink tones and the meandering vine compose this into an exceptionally romantic artwork.
Huang Ching-Ya s Renewal Skin Tree won Third Prize. Since ancient times, humans have pursued the secrets to eternal youth and beauty.
While the definition of beauty might differ between various perspectives, the four ladies illustrated in the painting reflect highly similar features
widely considered beautiful in our societies. Their identical looks almost appear to make them copies from the same source. The artist adopted a
green tone derived from plants as their skin color to express, as well as mock, the hope of rejuvenating one s skin like a plant.
Two awards of merit went to Hong Chun-Cheng s Sympathizing and Lin Li-Li s Shizuka the Coffeehouse . In Sympathizing , the artist
employs a wild cat and banana tree to symbolize the over-developing phenomena. The light serves as the linkage between the wild cat and the
surroundings. The artist s brush skills and composition demonstrate sophistication. The style in Shizuka the Coffeehouse is quite exceptional for
glue color painting, with the pink tone and misty space creating a very unique vibe. The artist has successfully developed her own individual style
by incorporating traditional and modern subjects.
After Taiwan officially name this art form as Glue Color Painting, its development has gone through various stages traditional and modern
styles (thick and thin layers), the authorized skills and materials (based on skills and materials developed in Japan) and evolving subject matter (the
Japanese style initially focused on flowers, birds and landscapes but gradually shifted towards human interest and social issues). Consequently,
the concept of aesthetics in Glue Color Painting has broadened and diversified. It is hoped that through the promotion of the Da Dun Fine Arts
Exhibition of Taichung City more and more artists from various cultural backgrounds will recognize and participate in this art form.
